Tokyo Neighborhoods: Ueno

On weekend we decided to visit a rather unusual spot, a cemetery. The Yanaka cemetery was massive, with many temples scattered around. Unlike Western cemeteries, this one had more trees and was less maintained. The overgrown graves were beautiful and made the cemetery feel more like a park, but it also created a sad and forgotten atmosphere.
There were many temples and shrines scattered throughout the cemetery, including the Tenno-ji temple with its big Buddha.
The Jomyoin was a Buddhist temple with some 20 000 statuettes representing jizo (deities that protect children).
As we left the cemetery we came across this beautiful (and very European) building.
From the cemetery, we walked through Ueno Park and found ourselves back at Ameyayokocho, the market we visited way back in March. Tokyo is a massive city, but spend an hour walking around and you'll encounter some extreme contrasts.
